Chamomile tea FAQ
What does chamomile tea taste like?
Chamomile has a mellow, slightly sweet taste with notes of honey, apple and hay. It is soft and round, with no bitterness when brewed correctly.
How do I brew loose chamomile?
Use 1 to 1.5 teaspoons per 250 ml cup and water just off the boil, about 96°C. Steep 4 to 6 minutes. A longer steep gives a fuller, more floral cup.
Why are whole chamomile flowers better than chopped?
Whole flower heads keep more of their aromatic oils, so the cup tastes fresher and sweeter. Finely chopped chamomile, common in tea bags, tends to taste flatter and can turn dusty.
Can I mix chamomile with other teas?
Yes. Chamomile blends well with mint, lavender, rooibos, apple and honey. Add a pinch to a mild green or white tea for a floral twist, keeping in mind the tea leaves will add caffeine.
