Description

Da Hong Pao Superfine – "Big Red Robe" Wuyi Rock Oolong

Da Hong Pao, or "Big Red Robe, " is a legendary oolong produced from tea bushes grown in the Wuyi Mountains of Fujian Province, China. During the Qing Dynasty it was honored with the title "King of Teas, " and today it remains one of China's most celebrated and sought-after oolongs.

Da Hong Pao is famous for its unique floral fragrance and its distinctive Wuyi "rock tea" character — a mineral depth that comes from tea bushes growing among the region's rocky cliffs. Its dark, roasted leaves produce a brew that's fragrant in scent, heavy in flavor and rich in color. Legend says the tea's name comes from red robes placed over the original bushes by a grateful emperor.

I start to like this tea again. I though it was a little plain comparing to a few other wuyi rocky tea at Tealyra, but maybe that's the character of this tea. It's good for winter.

I've been buying this for a while.

Typically, it has the characteristic rocky mineral taste, along with a malt note and an overly strong charcoal fkavour. Decent, but unremarkable.

The last shipment was different. The charcoal flavour is reduced, and instead of a malty note, there's a floral orchid note with a streak of cherries. It's beautifully balanced and withstands almost 10 steeps.

My favorite oolong. It tastes similar to bagged Oolong that you'll get from Bigelow. Love the musky aroma.

It's fine for the price you pay, the only bad thing is a really noticeable amount of stems (like 1/9).
